The waltz is a wonderfully evocative topos in classical music. From masterworks in its genre to deconstructions of Ravel to Ligeti, its lilting rhythms call to mind a rich array of references and musical worlds. This pieces features the incessant repetition of a three-note figure which could have plucked out of a waltz. The music develops as if trying to burst into a rich waltz but unable to, searching for some kind of musical resolution through a tense, acute sense of anticipation which builds and builds. The result is the ghost of a waltz, a waltz apparition.
